Phthalocyanine: Navy Warship CD (Phthalo 01) Very experimental techno here from Plug Research artist Phthalocyanine on this, his first full-length. Ten tracks of disjointed polyrhythms, metallic noises, unsettling synth lines and distorted loops. The end result sounds something like a collaboration between polygon window, mu-ziq, beautyon and low res but with a flavor and style that is distinctly Phthalocyanine. An engaging listening experience and an impressive first release for his new Phthalo label. 8/10 Since there there have been three other Phthalo label releases. Here are the reviews for those: . Ekswyzia: Logans ep limited cdr (Phthalo 02) The first in the Phthalo label limited cdr release series is by the mysterious Ekswyzia. This five track ep features the same type of experimental electronic audio chaos as heard on the previous Phthalo label release by Phthalocyanine. All five of these tracks, which range from two to seven minutes in length, are composed of seemingly disjointed rhythms, melodies, atmospheres, bleeps, buzzes, and sound effects. But as you listen to each track of this audio chaos, your ears begin make sense of the chaos and see the beautiful structures within the chaos. This ep is definitely not easy listening but then again, none of the Phthalo releases are supposed to be. 8/10 . Phthalocyanine: The Viridian limited cdr (Phthalo 03) The second in the Phthalo label limited cdr release series is by Mr Phthalo himself. This ep is actually a reissue of the Phthalo’s 1995 long out-of-print ep on the Plug Reseach label. Now he has re-released this ep to give us a taste of the early sound of Phthalo. Four tracks on this one much more in the "traditional idm sound" than phthalocyanine's later releases. All four tracks have a sound that reminded me of the classic Black Dog Production or early Autechre sound which combined sparse melodies with light crunchy percussion and a touch of experimental wierdness. This release would definitely fit in well with the early Skam or GPR releases. A cool release to see what the Phthalo sounds started out as. 7/10 . Crank: Wanton Phenomena limited cdr (Phthalo 04) Another new album from Danny Zelonky aka Low Res, this time on Phthalocyanine's Phthalo label. This one has more of an organic & percussive sound to it than this recent Approximate Love Boat cd on Plug Research but don't let that frighten you at all. Wanton Phenomena contains twelve tracks of quality IDM that fits in nicely with recent releases from Solvent, Bola, Bannlust, Epy, and Lustmord vs Metalbeast. Expect haunting melodies over crunchy, ofter polyrhythmic percussion with just a touch of experimentalism. Another great release from Danny Z and the Phthalo limited cdr release series. Get it if you still can. 9/10 Coming this month will be a new Phthalo label album from Rook Valard and an a new ep from Phthalocyanine.
