Obviously a lot of people are going the CDR route. which is better? working to raise the cash is better, sez i. there are duplication plants that will press you 500 cds for $500, and i've heard of cheaper, though i've yet to see any for myself. a cd-r itself costs about $250-300, and if you're going to give/sell your cd to any significant number of people, you'll need to spend $100+ on blanks, as well. i understand that some people already own cd-rs, but most don't. plus, while working to raise $500 takes time away from music, burning hundreds of cds takes away at least an equal amount of time, especially when your computer is a part of your music setup. once you've make the money to press one cd, if it is successful, it should pay for the next .. like i said before, duplication is not THAT much more expensive than a small/medium cd-r release. plus, there is the added benefit of having hundreds of copies to do with as you please. sell some to make your investment back, and then give the rest away.. or do whatever. you say that there's nothing foolish about wanting to get your music into the hands of as many people as possible. that's true, of course; but if you press 500 cds you're getting copies of your music into the hands of far more people. it does cost more money up front, but everyone's financial situations are different, and it's silly for anyone to generalize about that. if i were only planning on making 20-50 copies of something, i would home burn it, hands down. but when you want to have significantly larger numbers, it WILL save money and time to go to a plant. that's why they exist. noah
