it's been a while since i've wrote some reviews, expect more a little later... Guineo: Tosstones 12" (Chocolate Industries Chlt013) Push Button Objects: Half Dozen 12" (Schematic Sch009/Chocolate Industries Chlt014) Two new 12"s from the label that brought us umm... a bunch of other 12"s. What a bad introduction, but let's get to the point... Newest Choc Ind artist Guineo's debut record is perhaps the most experimental release to come from the schema/ci camp yet. The A Side consists of two tracks sounding like Richard Devine w/ funk (or maybe even Phthalocyanine) doing hip hop. In fact, this record is pressed on essentially the same clear vinyl Richie's Schematic 12" was. The B side has another Guineo track, 'Sexual Chocolate', which, in the ultimate electronic music cliche, features sex moans over a bland electro track. However, the real treat is the PBO remix where, after a couple so-so 12"s Edgar Farinas returns to form, keeping in theme with the noisey theme, but less chaotic and more controlled. Up to par, if not better than the material on his Schematic debut. Unfortunetly, it's back to more standard subpar PBO on 'Half Dozen', which teams up these two prominent Miami labels (I guess it shows that whatever rumored beef there was has been squashed, if there ever was any to begin with) As the title implies, here are six tracks. And once you get past the cool sleeve with the Afro'ed chick on a typwriter, you'll see that not one of the six is amazing. Produced between 95-96, the A side is pretty weak, especially the drill n' bass (remember the time period, this genre was still alive and well three years ago) attempt 'you got a problem with me?', then there are two tracks of weak boring hip hop ala his Skam 12" B side is a little better, opening up a sorta noisey hardcore electro track, 'pboory'. then comes 'Chusma29', which would have fit in well on the 'unknown' EP. Finally closing with 'Chewbacca on Crack', which starts of with a nice melody but it ultimetly goes no where, as no beat ever kicks in and the track is just randomly littered with noises/atmospherics. All in all, 'Half Dozen' isn't a bad record, per se, just bland, no flavor.. Like all the recent PBO records, this one lacks the excitement that his debut had to offer. However, if you really want a great example of the CI crew actually succeding at merging hip hop with IDM (and you can't get a hold of of PBO's debut), check out Guineo. and in regards to the 'ishmec folks', i officially agree with everyone else- i'd rather listen to chiastic slide (or any of the first four SCH 12"s for that matter). mlt/stm
