I don't think the guitars are bad, and they aren't used in most of the tracks anyway. I think everything works really well together on Landcruising. I remember alot of people saying that it sounded too retro. When my friend Ben was in the UK the summer that Landcruising came out, he commented that he was surprised to see huge posters for the album at Tower Records in the UK.
