hi all, just got back to see there's been some discussions/comments about Monotonik and Winamp/MOD playing, etc. Just wanted to clarify some stuff there.. [In relation to http://www.mono211.com/monotonik ..] Monotonik, the 'techno/idm/wotever' label, only releases MP3s nowadays. But in the past, coming from that oldskool-bedroom angle, we used to release MODs, a format I guess a lot of you know something about (essentially, it's a file with all the samples you need to make up a tune and then the songdata in it too!) All MODs (.MOD, .XM, .S3M, .IT) are 'played' by Winamp. But, Winamp doesn't play the various MOD formats correctly. However, in my opinion (and this is sure to bring howls of derision from various people), it plays almost all tunes well enough to still be my player of choice. I've always tried to make sure that Monotonik-released MODs atleast play adequately in Winamp, too. You can improve the playing of the earlier Monotonik and Mono .MODs by downloading a plugin for WinAmp by Carsten Sorensen called the Oldsk00l MOD Plugin. This makes sure all old 4-channel. MODs composed on Amigas play correctly, with some added stereo effects too, and it's pretty groovy (and it's got a plug for us in the 'about' section, hihi!) You can find the plugin at http://www.winamp.com or download here: ftp://209.0.254.40/pub/winamp/resources/in_sk00l.zip As for .XMs, they seem to play _mainly_ OK in Winamp, but there's definitely problems with some .ITs. So if you're concerned about perfect playback (it is unfair to the artist when their stuff isn't played back right), then go get ModPlug Player, as Esa/Lackluster said, at: http://www.modplug.com/modplug/playerdl.shtml Imho it's mainly minor problems, tho, as I said. It's annoying that playback is a problem - we should probably bring it to Nullsoft's attention.. However, also as Esa said, we made a decision to stop releasing MODs of all kinds about 6 months ago, so whilst we have quite a lot of old MODs available, and I really love a whole bunch of them, it's really MP3s (and CDs/vinyl forthcoming) where our focus is at. [Oh, I think I mentioned this before, and it's not to discredit Bogdan's albums at all, but Bogdan Raczynski's "Boku Mo Wakaran" on Rephlex actually uses a bunch of samples from Mono artists like Zyad and Distance/Lackluster, cos he had a habit of taking Mono (MOD) tunes, clearing the songdata, and making his own tunes outta it, since we used to talk to him quite a bit, and put a MOD or two of his out on the label. We're not going to bitch about it cos his finished tunes are top and he wasn't borrowing lotsa speech samples or anything, but.. still kinda cool/crazy, no?] -- Finally, a little explanation of the whole Mono/Mono211/Monotonik thing. Basically, Mono started in early 1996 as an Internet-only, Amiga-only (!) MOD label. The early releases, all of which are available on http://www.mono211.com, span anything from house/techno/d+b/breakbeat, but all 'electronica', or wotever you want to call it. In 1997 a decision was made to split Mono into two labels. Mono211 is a freestyle breakbeat/triphop-type label (which released MODs but now only releases mp3s, and has done the music to a Playstation game, "Tank Racer" - a couple of our artists currently have a 12-inch out on Moving Shadow sublabel Audio Couture, but some of the Mono211 tunes skirt topics discussed on this mailinglist - De:Bug magazine in Germany called us the 'Ninja Tune of the Net'. Look out for a 'Blechsdottir'-style mixed CD as the first official CD release from Mono211.) The website is, naturally enough, http://www.mono211.com :) Monotonik is, as mentioned, the idm/techno label, and has released a bunch of mp3s and a limited-edition Lackluster album, "CDR#2". Forthcoming on Monotonik is a CD album by md, "Between Gaps", with perhaps a 12-inch to go with it.. Website it http://www.mono211.com/monotonik , yeppers. Umm, so apologies for such a long explanation, but that's where we are :) Any questions/requests chuck me a mail.. regards, simonc/xxx@xxxxxxx+toniknullstarz. (xxx@xxxxxxx.com)
