"For most techno/breakbeats producers, technology is just a substitute for
writing a complicated composition, or a shelter from exposing their artless
forms. But for Riow Arai, it is a playground for releasing his spirit. He
has the talent to open a door to the future of music" Nobukazu Takemura

Following the release of the killer Disturbance EP (Sep 29) comes Tokyo beat
producer Riow Arai's first album release outside of his home country.

Influenced as much by Chicago post-rock and German electronica as it is by
the cut-up styles of Matthew Herbert or Rob Swift, or the straight-up hip
hop of The RZA or Busta Rhymes (check the 'RA Recommends' section of his
website to find out where he's coming from), Mind Edit has undoubtedly got
the funk. In spades.

This is hiphop like you've never heard before, masterfully crafted,
incredibly fresh and quite unique. Defying definition, Mind Edit observes no
borders; follows no rules; obliterates established concepts.

Riow Arai made his debut in 1995, and has released four albums to date, with
a new Japanese release to come later this year. He has created soundtracks
for Playstation games, played in Japan with Hexstatic, Four Tet and Skam
Records, and produced numerous Japanese artists, including Mego's Tujiko
Noriko. Western fans include Jonathan More (Coldcut), Si Begg and John Peel..

CD: LP:
1. A1. intro
2. A2. undulation
3. B1. inter
4. B2. disturbance

8. C1. flatter
9. C2. break roads
10. C3. trillion
11. D2. i dine at daybreak

"When you've got the likes of Jonathan More, Si Begg and John Peel singing
your praises you know you must be doing something right, and in this
instance we can only concur. This is great stuff. Like Primo, Akufen,
Prefuse 73 and Dabrye knocking heads for a finely tuned foray into low slung
instrumental hip hop and twisted downbeat machine funk. Excellent" **** DJ

"Strong, grimy and minimal with lots of character" Mr Scruff

"Unspeakably good and sublime pick-up for the patently brilliant Leaf. I
have a few older things by RA =AD so this is a breath of fresh air. Sounds
like the love children of Krush and DJ Shadow" Disastronaut

"A love song for the melting of the polar ice caps"

Sonic storytellers 310 return with their fifth album - without doubt their
most accomplished and accessible to date. Distilled from two years of work,
and including four vocal tracks that accentuate the dreamlike narrative that
emerges as one explores the album.

The seamless mix of songs and instrumental pieces creates a deep river of
sound that more than repays repeated listening. From the lush, hypnotic
opener 'Opposite Corners', through the ambitious, eastern-sounding 'Night On
The Ocean', to the nouveau prog of 'ExuMix' (which started life as remix of
a track by Voodoo Muzak), there's a variety and depth to these adventures in
hi-fi that draws the listener in.

Now a fully fledged trio, and spread right across the American continent,
310 are Tim Donovan (Brooklyn), Joseph Dierker (Seattle) and Andrew Sigler
(LA).

"We created a lot of tracks before we found the voice of the record", says
Tim. "310 continues to evolve and with each record we feel that it's our
best work. That's all you can ask for with a creative project."

Formulated around themes of cities and oceans, streets and rivers, the album
takes elements of music from the last three decades to synthesise something
that could only have been created in the 21st Century. The aquatic
travelogue is perhaps most apparent in the lyrics to 'Pacific Gravity', a
track that was introduced as an instrumental on the group's 1999 album, The
Dirty Rope.

CD: LP:
1. A1. Opposite Corners
2. A2. Shadow Traffic

"a murky, leftfield, subterranean other world" 4/5 Burnitblue

"a discerning offbeat journey through shifting bass, chopped drums and a
swelling Hammond" DJ

"timeless, fashionless music. the emotional pull calls to mind the fusion of
Billy Cobham, Recessional is a dreamy cinematic experience. Hear this" 4/5
Echoes

"their most mature and accessible piece of work to date. Blessed are those
given the chance to experience 310" themilkfactory.co.uk

"310 are throwing all sorts of science, shapes & colours, which blend
together to create a constantly moving melody -sounds familiar, but it's
also like nothing you've heard before" Update

3. COLLEEN London show

At last! Colleen is to make her long-awaited debut UK live appearance at The
Arts Caf=E9, London on Wednesday 17th December. Presented by Track & Field,
support on the night will come from Pedro (Melodic), plus Leaf DJs.

The show follows the release of Colleen's (aka Parisienne C=E9cile Schott)
acclaimed debut album, Everyone Alive Wants Answers. Her intimate live
performance is a unique and idiosyncratic experience, utilising any number
of unexpected instruments (including guitar, cello, melodica and music
boxes). The result is effortlessly charming; playful and melancholic in
equal measure. And nary a laptop in sight!

venue: The Arts Caf=E9
address: 28 Commercial Street, LONDON, E1

"Oh, this is good. Really good. Colleen is 26-year-old Parisian C=E9cile
Schott, and
Everyone Alive Wants Answers is her debut album. Possessing the same ability
as Susumu Yokota and Carl Craig to make time seem to stand still in their
compositions, C=E9cile constructs almost child-like gossamer threads of melody
and fragile ambience... to create something quite beautiful"
**** DJ

"Sweet, strange and just a little sinister"
Mojo

"A work of uncommon dearness and dusty beauty"
SleazeNation

"Alongside Susumu Yokota's Sakura, this is a post-ambient milestone"
Careless Talk Costs Lives

"Beautiful stuff"

We're currently scouting for anyone out there who may be interested in
making videos or short films for releases on The Leaf Label, past, present
or future, or is working on shorts and would be interested in using music

Inevitably, budgets are going to be very small, but all successful

2004, as well as being submitted to TV stations, websites and film festivals
worldwide.

In particular, we're looking for people to make short films for the music of
COLLEEN.
