(heh) in my opinion, you are right (ie: the average idmer wouldn't go near HoS but will buy anything on FAX sight unseen), and it's a darn shame because most of the HoS stuff smokes your average FAX release. well, to be precise, the stuff on HoS' sub-label Fathom is great - some of the HoS stuff is a little too wishy-washy newagey for me. i have just about all the Fathom discs (helps that my friend used to be the art director) and they are uniformly excellent. some favorites: robert rich/lustmord - stalker: shit-your-pants-scary ambience. metallic insect chitters. bottomless bass drones. swamps of liquid metal. yeaargghh. michael stearns/ron sunsinger - kiva: freaky native american tribal rituals. drums, chants, synths, people vomiting during ayhuasca rituals, inside gigantic reverbs. lightwave - mundus subterraneus: screaky screetchy scraping sickening strings. the sound of metal strings being scraped by rusty razor blades. very unnerving. robert rich/steve roach - soma: percolating eastern rhythms, shimmering synth textures. like muslimgauze only more varied. michael stearns - the lost world: sweeping uplifting synths with the occasional siren-like vocal or chant. for standing on top of the tallest mountain and looking down at the clouds. suspended memories - (either, there are two): the sound of night in cities on the edge of the rainforest. rhythmic, slightly urban, slightly ancient. steve roach - the magnificent void: one of those rare albums where the title tells you all you need to know. -- Jon Drukman xxx@xxxxxxxx.xxx ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Plan: Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.
