he he he, here in LA area same shit. Must explain why the OC crew has events like Sterile and
Nightnoise and other smaller more shit-downish events. I don't think IDM was ever meant for a
large CLUB/dance setting. read the first Artificial Intelligence and it says something like
"music for when you get back from the club" I agree. Certainly, some foolios, like myself,
can dance to Lexaunculpt, but most people when they hear LIVE IDM are either listening or
asking their neighbor in the crowd "what the fuck kinda music is this" Thats great.

IDM not causing a big crowd to dance has brought me to appreciate spinning electro. Many IDM
trax have plenty of electro sounds and feel to them and they can be mixed with more
traditional electro (ie something from IT or Seratonin) if you're good at DJ'ing (which I'm
not). But for a LIVE performance I don't think the crowd can get into it as much. This is
especially true since more and more musicians are simply bringing a laptop/Desktop computer
to the gig and nothing else. It's kinda boring to watch some geek behind a monitor hit the
spacebar and watch the sequencer/track player go by.

of course, this wholve live-dancing issue is also dependent on which artists you're calling
IDM?
Pole, for example, had the entire EL Rey theatre moving, but his music sounded like AMBIENT
to me. (ok, lets not debate on POLE and what genre he fits). My point is that he had a Laptop
and no four to the floor. The Pole gig also did not attract the raver crowd. So what I wrote
above doesn't always apply. Sometimes a dude with a laptop only can rock the house. Richie
Divine on the other hand shocked everyone, there was any "dance" feel to any of his music. He
too only had a laptop.

So who knows.
I guess setting, style of IDM, sound system, how many drinks the crowd has had, how old the
crowd is, and other variables also go into whether a crowd will respond by dancing to a LIVE
IDM performance.
