>the full >length album by sons of silence is just wicked. I listened to this at a shop out of curiosity and loved it instantly. As you said, it's got great basslines with shifting beats and a lovely hollowed-out dubby feel. It's not exactly melodic but the textures alone are tasty. Resembles certain aspects of the Orb, Weatherall, and Colourbox (i.e. those dubby instrumental tracks off their 4AD singles comp). I've heard that the latest single isn't as good as the album though. Plaid are all over the music press lately. They're on the cover of the latest Wire - interesting interview and music-theory musings where an admission of *not* wanting to push musical boundaries is noted as almost a good thing. The duo also review the singles for Muzik. As for all the stuff about vocals on Nf3s, from the talk around here, you'd think that the whole album had vocals - it's on 3 or 4 tracks only. I don't have much more to add to the analysis of the album than what's already been said. It's a mixed bag. The same Wire issue has some quotes from a member of Black Dog named "Keir". Who's "Keir"? And does anyone have opinions about Cornelius? He's Japanese, hyped by James Lavelle, a member of the Shibuyakei posse (along with Pizzicato Five) who do interesting sonic pop collages. I was wondering if his releases like "69/96" and "Fantasma" were worth picking up. Just realized yesterday that one of those tiny little icons on the back of Bytes was the little TV set which is the Plaid icon. Hmm.
