I shouldn=E2=80=99t have written =E2=80=9Canother electrical format=E2=80=9D= because many of these USB extenders seem to be optical. My point is = that they=E2=80=99re no longer USB once you convert to optical, = ethernet, or any other trick that extends USB beyond the length that it = was designed for. As DJ Maytag alluded to, there have been many problems with USB hubs = with regard to audio interfaces, and the thing to keep in mind is that a = USB hub is entirely within the specifications! Using an extender is = going outside the specifications, so it=E2=80=99s reasonable to expect = even more problems for audio. As has been pointed out, USB, USB2, and USB3 each have different cable = length limits. However, the fact that they are all cross-compatible = sometimes makes it difficult to know whether you can achieve the longest = length reliably if both sides are not literally designed to the same = revision of the specifications. To your point, though, Dante is rather expensive if you only need to use = it for one thing. Where Dante starts paying for itself is when you=E2=80=99= re looking at wiring an entire venue for multichannel sounds with many = stage boxes, monitors, mixers, computers, and speakers.
