I have purchased and given away Laughing Stock at least a dozen times. Every time I was talking music with a friend and they hadn't heard it, I took it off the shelf, pressed it in their hands, and asked them to promise that they would listen to it with their full attention, at night, with the lights off. Tape Op published several wonderful reminiscences of Phill Brown, who was the recording engineer for Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock. He goes in depth into the recording of those two albums - if you can find those articles, they're well worth reading for understanding a unique approach to recording. My thoughts are with his family, for whom he quit the music industry.
