A while back, I spent some time analyzing the schematics and firmware of = the Xpander and Matrix-12, and noticed something interesting. The ribbon cable from the Processor Board to the Voice Board(s) has = enough signals allocated and named to drive 4 Voice Boards. The two = extra traces aren=E2=80=99t connected, and the firmware doesn=E2=80=99t = support them, but it seems that somebody was thinking of a massive = 24-voice Matrix. Since the Voice Boards are basically the same between the Xpander and = Matrix-12, it seems like it might be possible that Oberheim once made a = prototype of a Matrix-24. Has anyone heard of such a thing? The Processor Board is very different between the Xpander and Matrix-12, = most obviously because of the keyboard, but there are other differences = such as CV/Gate. It would likely require a third Processor Board design = to control 24 voices, but it might be only a minor change. What problems = exist with variable speed envelopes and LFO generators should be = isolated to each individual Voice Board, and shouldn=E2=80=99t get worse = with more stacked. Anyone have stories from decades past to share? Brian Willoughby
