I wrecked a lot of stuff learning how to do it. :) Wrecking stuff is part of the learning process. If its a 101, get good old lead based solder and use only that. ie) match the solder type to the device you are working You need a nice soldering iron with a good tip. Temperature controlled is nice. I go a little hotter for de-soldering. Weller is a great brand. Practice on something less important or even build a few kits. Lots of excellent experience can come from building kits.
