I just saw this "young cat" (and yes, he's a young'un) perform live at the
Knitting Factory the other night, opening for a friend's band called the
Freight Elevator Quartet. Oh and some guy named DJ Spooky was there too.
Anyway, my impression of Mr. Datach'i's music was "Hmm, sounds like aphex"
for his use of quirky and childlike melodies mixed with, if I may say so,
gratuitously fucked-up beats. His on-stage gear fit into a 1'x2'x2' space
about the size of a typewriter, consisting of a bunch of little knobs that
he was turning rather calmly. He sat cross-legged on the floor and twiddled.
I'm told his setup consists of a DAT, effects, and mixing stuff. It also
looked like he was having technical difficulties (Unit himself was helping
Datach'i with his tech), so I'd like to hear his release when it comes out.

FEQ, who as I've said are friends of mine (and I think other IDM listmembers
probably know them), played a really interesting show that surprisingly (and
I should shoot myself for saying this) benefitted from the presence of DJ
Spooky. Their new album, "File Under Futurism", is something I think all of
you IDM kids should check out. The Quartet consists of a mix of old and new
instruments, from a Nord synth to a Cello. FEQ was born out of the Columbia
University electronic music department and their music grows out of very
diverse roots, IDM being only a part. The cellist's melodies bring a dark,
vaguely eastern european, slow, and wholly human flow that you don't get
from a DAT (although I'd guess that they use DATs too). Anyway, I'm biased
cuz they are friends of mine, but you should check them out:
