It's worth hearing the Brand X albums from that period for what the Phil Collins/Percy Jones rhythm section sounded like in a jazz fusion context (yes, Phil can actually be quite good when he keeps his yap shut). Another suggestion would be the Holger Czukay albums "Movies" and "On The Way To The Peak Of Normal".
