exactly, but hip hop functions much better as a whole.

there are actually FOUR: mc, dj, graf artist, b-boy. (and why is it that
the beatbox somehow got pushed out of there? there should be FIVE, dammit,
but whatever.)

Yes, but those involved in ANY of the elements should have at least some
respect of the others and the effect. Even nu jack puff daddy skool fans
can tell you that the turntable is an essential part of hip hop. And when
someone claimes to be 'raised on hip hop', they should have at least a
slight bit of knowledge of what they claim to be raised on. The one major
complaint I have about so-called 'hip hop headz' is that they have no
knowledge of the past. A few years back I had a Busta Rhymes (and the like)
fan laugh at me when i named dropped tribe called quest as one of my
favorite hip hop acts. Where the fuck would busta be if it wern't for
tribe's 'scenerio'?, he definetly wouldn't be on mtv with martha stewart.
"Ultramagenetic MCs? Who are they" is another favorite i hear a lot. An
artist needs to have a track covered by Puff Daddy or the Def Squad in
order to get respect as an 'old-school' artist. Unless, of course, you're
run dmc. I mean even most newbie IDMers have a slight knowledge of at least
kraftwerk and eno and the like. it just seems to me that if these people
truley loved the music that they would do whatever it takes to further
their knowledge and expose themselves to as much of thfe scene as possible.
to re-quote xxxxx@xxxxxxxx, 'educate yourself'.
