I had a big chip on my shoulder with mini USB appearing as the power source for lots of new gear. Even my newly beloved SH-01a! Then I headed into a Tiger (the Icelandic equivalent of a dollar store) and these cables were everywhere, in varying qualities, from super cheap for a plastic one to inexpensive for a cloth shrouded one.
