I'd have to agree with this one. The spam is a pain, but there are even
more fundamental problems with newsgroups. Only the really large
interest newsgroups (Star Trek and the like) get a decent amount of
regular users. Most people just come and go, which means the same posts
week-in, week-out (I know this happens here, but not half as much). The
people on this list, in the great majority, CARE about music and
contribute what they feel about what they listen to. It is also a forum
for arists/promotors/record labels/fans to discuss what they want from
each other (even if this doesn't seem to be happening quite as much
since g303 (what happened to him?) & RDJ dissappeared).

But still, where else would you have got RDJ and Black Dog arguing about
music publicly? Certainly it would have never happened had there been
separate Black Dog/RDJ lists/newsgroups. Remember when someone tried to
set up and RDJ list like this one. Thank God that never worked. How
boring would a solely RDJ based list be? The man and his music is
interesting, but not THAT interesting! As for the Autechre newsgroup,
what would happen inbetween Autechre releases. Surely there'd be almost
nothing worth discussing besides philosophical debates as to their sound
or whatever (which are fine here, where they belong and where there will
be a difference of opinion). The best thing about this list is the
diversity of music discussed. To cordon off artist like this is to
reduce the power of this list for introducing people to new music, which
is why I made eariler comments against all these Nazi 'clean up IDM'
campaigns. If we cleaned up IDM the list would never move forward.
Artists such as Luke Vibert would have never have been discussed for
more than a few posts, because it would have been dismissed as
off-topic. Ditto jungle (which IMO is still not discussed here enough).
This is a progressive list we have here, unlike most others, and I
propose we keep it that way.

Gb.

PS I'm sure there are many of us on the list who have bought something
that they would not ordinarily buy, just because it has been reccomended
or discussed here. I know I have. Surely this sums up what the list is
all about - exploring music through communication.
