Funny; I find people to be a bit *over*-critical of things in general,
especially in electronic-music circles. There's a definite spirit of
cooler-than-you-ness that hangs over people in any alternative (is it safe
to use that word yet?  the nineties are almost finished) music "scene";
it's not nearly as bad on this list as in other places, though. Most all
folks here tend to be honest about their opinions on things, rather than
buying into the emperor's new clothes or ripping on established artists
just because they're considered passe at the moment.

Hearing something get slammed doesn't really bother me. Instead, it
assures me that people aren't just blindly eating up whatever's thrown at
them; if something stinks, it will be known.

I rarely read actual "record reviews", but I do find discussion groups
like this one to be an absolute priceless resource for finding new stuff.
In fact, at this very moment I'm making a cdrom of the list archives off
hyperreal just so I can search them at a moment's notice for people's
opinions on records right after they came out, etc. (I'm still catching up
on stuff that was released years ago). Plus there's always the "I really
like ________, what else should I check out?" chatter. It's the next best
thing to actually hearing the material in question. IMHO.
