I really am not feeling this comment at all... Maybe it's just my flawed=
=0Aoutlook, but programmed jazz isn't jazz at all. The way I see it,=0Aj=
azz=3Dimprovisation. Sometimes this improv is within a strict form (bebo=
p,=0Aetc.), sometimes it's "free jazz." But programming jazz strips it o=
f its=0Aessential nature. I'm going to make an ass out of myself with th=
is comment,=0Abut a lot of people on this list seem to have a skewed conc=
eption of what jazz=0Ais. People like limp 70's fusion, the programmed n=
oodling of various newer=0Amusicians, elevator lite jazz Bukem style, etc=
. That's fine, it isn't my=0Ataste, but it's your right. It just bothe=
rs me when you call it jazz, because=0Ait's another beast entirely.
=09Anyway, I guess that leaves me questioning the limits of IDM, and elec=
tronic=0Amusic in general. I think programming can go a really long way.=
.. But has=0Aanyone really been able to achieve the same level of commun=
ication and=0Ainteraction with their synths and computer programs that a =
moderately gifted=0Aplayer can with a sax or guitar or other physical ins=
trument? Is any computer=0Aprogram as flexible and nuanced as a physical=
instrument, dynamically and=0Aotherwise? Maybe in a few years electroni=
c musicians will be able to=0Ainstantly call up exactly the sound they wa=
nt, but I don't see that capability=0Aexisting now.
=09In some ways, I would think that DJs are further along than the teemin=
g=0Ahoards of white boys with sequencers. At least they can almost insta=
ntly=0Achoose any record, and any sound ever recorded... Still, there ar=
e technology=0Alimitations=A0=97turntables can only pitch up and down so =
far, djs can't switch=0Arecord instantly... There's still a long way to =
go.
=09So what's my point? Just that I don't mean to flame or insult anyone,=
but=0Athere's still a fundamental difference between electronic and=0Ael=
ectric/acoustic/physical music. And paying lip service to being "jazzy" =
or=0Aanything else isn't going to change that.
