> Reciprocally, I've noticed quite a few of my friends into Stereolab, > Krautrock, Kranky label, Windy & Carl, guitar-related "electronica" -- > say "what" when you talk about Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig, > Detroit-anything, electro-funk, rap-anything-except-Beasties.... > > How do these lines get drawn....? most likely by the media/record companies. even at the indie level, labels are very good at targeting crowds, college radio promotions are a good example of this. most labels are looking for only the person that deals with "this type of music" when they make their calls. they know how to market just as well as the big boys. magazines, even the indie-ish ones tend to lump things together as well. dare i say that even the idm-list is a huge lumper. we tend to go with what's safe and kind of guaranteed in a way when when it comes to our record purchasing, mostly due to economic reasons i would guess. in this matter, there's probably loads of great labels getting completely passed by. brian
