>>>POLE

by GRANULAR SYNTHESIS commissioned by Hull Time Based Arts.

Under an increasingly compressed projection of multiple information, POLE
subjects the audience to a heavy salvo of media stimuli.

Using high intensity light, video and audio projection (massive sub-bass
and focussed strobes) Granular Synthesis strive to achieve a degree of
complexity and audience manipulation not seen before in a media event.

The scale and order of building overloaded mass of live stimuli
results in non-narrative structures. Attacking multisensual INPUT ,
severed in an instant, disturbing and de-constructing the audience's skins
of intellectual protection and desire to 'understand', affronting them
with a ritual of media metastructures and images.

As the event evolves the audience itself becomes subject to a bombardment
of nevertheless seductivily balanced stimuli. As in AREAL A ( Steirischer
Herbst 1997) the effect of being frozen in fascination and suffering in
that overload is that state of mind which allows a distinct encounter
with the another self.

However the task of POLE is not the machinery but the flow of information
both as an agressive manipulative invader as well as a seductive, erotic
mass to surf on.

Thus POLE is a setup in which beyond approachable content the
floodgates open to release an overflow forcing anybody there to witness,
a lusty sinking deep in the roar, both compulsive and at times repulsive.

POLE is Granular Synthesis most abstract piece so far, utilizing images and
sounds of the human body in flash portions more than in a continuous stream.
Video becomes one out of several lightsources; no light at all but pure sound
a crucial part of the dramaturgy. A few but carefully grown ingredients
form in POLE into a radical, a delicate substance morphing from liquid to
hard, switching states from fertilizer to acid.

The audience is invited to participate in the questioning of sensually
encountered sounds and imagery at times frustrating and at others hypnotic,
the freedom which remains is the freedom to dive into or leave.
