buying the kid a game unit thingy (probably today) but don't know
which to pick up... the N64 or the Playstation (or is there another?)

OK. As a teen, with a job, i obviously would have both of these. let me tell
you of the pro's and cons of each.

N64.
pro-
nice, colorful graphics.
cute games for little kids.
fastest in the hardware department.
has some gems that PSX dosen't. (ie. mario kart 64, goldeneye, mario 64)

cons-
blurry textures.
really small storage space (12 megs, going to 64 megs with the advent of the
64DD) causes lack of full motion video and really bad, repetitive music.
(bad for us IDM'ers, eh?)
lack of good games. i mean, i can think of maybe 5 games i want to buy at
most.
expensive games. (60 and up.)

PSX-
pros-
HUGE selection of great games.. EA Sports line, RPG's, kids games, whatever
you want, and more keep coming.
cheap games - 35 to 50 bucks.
uses cd's so it has lots of storage space for FMV and cd-quality, non
repetitive music.
has the best companies producing games for it: (ie squaresoft, EA, Eidos,
SCEA.)
lots of gems that N64 dosent have (ie Final fantasy series, EA sports line,
tomb radier, mega man, whatever..)

cons-
2x cdrom drive causes sometimes long loading times. (still has 30 FPS FMV..
somehow)
uses cd's so you have to be careful not to scratch them.
lacking to the N64 in processing power, no big deal.
sometimes grainy textures and such, nothing to worry about, really.

So, here it is overall.
If you have a small kid, get him a N64 if you have the money to pay for all
the really pricey games. If you have a 10 year old or higher, get him the
PSX. With an amazing selection of games and cheap ones to boot, this is my
system of choice. THe N64 has somewhat of a future, but i mean, its taking
too damn long to get there.
