Here's a reply to the message "Re: (idm) newbie" you wrote on Wed, 11 Aug 1999 12:55:35 EDT: >Yes, definitely "jazzy," um, well, sort of, I guess, if jazz = undanceable >beats and underwater recordings. To my ears, Squarepusher hasn't really changed *that* much. I often get shrieks of disgust when I suggest there's not an awful lot of difference between something like 'Hard Normal Daddy' and 'Music is Rotted One Note'. I think it's because a lot of people, when they listen to pre-MIRON Squarepusher, tend to hear the drum/drill & bass first and the jazz second. For me, it's always the jazzy elements I hear first -- hence the reason MIRON sounds in a similar vein to his earlier work. Of course, MIRON, Budakan Mindphone and Maximum Priest are all progressions, of a sort. The psychotic cut & paste elements are being phased out for a softer compositional style, but the energy and grooves of Tom's stuff still remains constant. -- Mark Stevens http://www.headspin.clara.net/
