>As for Tricky, he might make his own music, but only just. Badly looping=
=0A>a sample and throwing some other cut up bits over the top hardly rank=
s=0A>as the most effort in the world, IMO, and although effort isn't=0A>e=
verything, his latest batch of music is the most lacklustre expression=0A=
>of 'genius' I've ever heard.=0ADISCLAIMER: I understand very little abo=
ut the procedures/mechanics of music=0Amaking, and I'm generally an ignor=
ant bastard.=0A=09Graham, I think you're missing the point. Yes, Tricky =
uses a sampler a=0Ahelluva lot. But I don't think anybody else does as m=
uch with a sampler as he=0Adoes. I don't think anybody could make an Eri=
c B cymbal hit as claustrophobic=0Aas he does on Makes me Wanna Die. Sam=
e goes for any of the other songs on his=0Aalbums where I don't know the =
sample source=97Tricky appropriates sounds,=0Alyrics, etc. and uses them =
to create his own vision which IMO is completely=0Aunique. Evrything he =
does is a collage=97he doesn't just work the sampler hard,=0Ahe rips frag=
ments of lyrics from Public Enemy and elsewhere, his albums are=0Aheavy o=
n the cover songs. Somehow however, unlike Oasis or Puffy, he makes=0Aot=
her people's material his own=97as i said earlier, he "plays" the sampler=
, he=0Adoesn't just sample. And once he has his material in place, he do=
es so much=0Amore to bring it into his world: through repetition (ever no=
ticed that makes=0Ame wanna die is basically a 2 minute song repeated twi=
ce?), through album=0Aarrangement (just sit down and follow the arcs of h=
is albums=97every track is=0Aexactly where it belongs), through lyrics (w=
hich tread a fine line, but IMO he=0Apulls it off every time), through vo=
calists (who all have amazing sounding=0Avoices if not always good techni=
cal skills). Basically, I think the man is a=0Agenius=97his albums have =
their unlistenable flops (ghetto youth, strugglin',=0Aetc.), but I even f=
ind those conceptually interesting. And, I beg you, see=0Athe man live i=
f humanly possible=97the repetitious stuff on Pre-Millenium=0Atension mak=
es so much more sense live, when he's able to build each song for=0Aas lo=
ng as he needs, when you can see how involved he gets, when you can hear=
=0Athe funk reworking of She Makes Me Wanna Die... (To head off comments=
in=0Aadvance, I'm under the impression that he's only got his live show =
into shape=0Aon the PMT tour, and that he didn't know how to work with an=
audience=0Apreviously).=0A=0AMore on the hiphop tip-for all NYCers, kool=
Keith (Dr. Octagon) is playing a=0Ashow at tramps with the Ultramagnetic=
MCs and Company Flow on thursday 2/26.=0AEmail me privately if you're th=
inking of going. $20 i think... =0A=0ASam=0A
