If anybody can top this elctro/hip-hop recommendation, then I tip my hat to
them:

Mantronix--The Album

1. Bassline
2. Needle to the Groove
3. Mega-Mix
4. Hardcore Hip Hop
5. Ladies
6. Get Stupid "Fresh" Part 1
7. Fresh is the Word

Definitely fits your criteria of "peak album of electro in the day."

np: Mantronix "The Album"...What else? Just arrived this afternoon from
cdnow.com. I almost broke the cd case in eagerness. I haven't heard some
of these tracks since 1985! MC Tee's lyrics are still funky as hell after
all these years!

evenin' all.

eric, nice discussion on electro, hip hop and chronology. thanks for
clearing up some debates. now, to start another: who can offer me a
"canonical" electro album to take a listen to so i can nail down for
myself what is electro and what is instead early hip hop ish?

suggestions along the lines of "first electro album proper", "best
compilation of tip top electro singles" or "peak album of electro in the
day" (not revivalist) welcomed. reasoned debate allowed, name calling and
attitude not alllowed. :)

bonus round: who in the current IDM scene shows the most electro spirit,
or influence, or what have you, so i can follow up my archaeology with
some modern study.
