I don't think it's all that straight-- to be honest I'm pretty excited
that the hip hop scene has breathed some life into some musical areas
which have piles of current IDMers gazing deep into their own body
cavities. As far as I'm concerned, this is the first time hip hop's been
exciting since "Nation of Millions".

As far as IDM sucking: it's just done growed up. It's no longer a small
group of innovators blazing their own trails. There are now IDM
conventions, just like rock conventions or jazz conventions, which means
scads of imitators. The thing somebody said about IDM requiring
innovation by its very nature I can't agree with-- it's just that in the
first 5-10 years of a musical type/form (which IDM is arguably in, despite
whatever direct lineage claims some want to make), things are wide open.
They aren't quite as wide open anymore-- there's inward pressure from
so-called "purists" (read: murderers) and foxes-by-nature who've just
stayed in their holes to long when they should have jumped ship, who now
complain about the lack of innovation. If you're too old to start over,
sorry. Music buying always outstrips innovation if you channel yourself
into only one area.

So it goes. Ten years from now there'll be ultra-hip retro idmers quoting
ae and afx as collective childhood memories.

M.

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's up.
