What you're talking about is phrase sampling, to use a marketing term. And I'd pretty much agree with you on that one. While much creative music can be based on sampling phrases, and I'm sure we'll see much innovation in this area in the future, there's plenty of crap out there, exacerbated by the phrase-sampling oriented production machines now out on the market. I think DJ Shadow does a lot of phrase sampling, either that or he's a genius. Hip hop in the 80s was based on phrase sampling and at that time it was innovative, but these days we want more...
