well, honestly, no. bottom line is whether you like it or not. period.
I could care less what it's called.

but we all like to compartmentalize and organize and try to understand,
so here's some of my spare change:

in my book, dj shadow invented "trip hop." or perhaps perfected the
form. some will claim portishead, but the shadow had a coupla twelves
out before them and his excellent 'what does your soul look like' ep
paralleled the first portishead f/l, I believe.

I've always found portishead a little too dry (or something) for me, but
I still respect them. if I wanna do "trip hop" these days, I'll reach
for the morcheeba. execllent production, quality musicians, decent
lyrics. sure, it's safe and mainstream, but sometimes that's whatchya
need. haven't been to a party yet where morcheeba was played and there
were complaints or someone new wasn't turned on. take your victories
where you can, I suppose.

>I used to think that Trip Hop was defined by the "U.S. Homegrown -
>Total Trip Hop" series on Moonshine.

groan. I think that most of would agree that they could count the
number of quality moonshine releases on one hand or less, although
they've come around a little over time.

>You know bands like "The Crystal Method" amd

>and that this was called "Big Beats"

um, yeah, definitely. and the ChemBros are "big beat", not "trip hop,"
as someone posited earlier.

>So when I was corrected, I was told that the definitive "Trip Hop" >CD
was ISDN by the Future Sound of London.

who the hell are you getting your advice from? I mean, great album, but
"trip hop?" crissakes, sure it's just a tag name, but ISDN includes
much more than that.

>Sounds like fragmented
>ambience to me, but what do I know.

call me crazy, but I'd call it "idm." (now, let's not start THAT thread
(again).)

and here in Chicago, we're all clueless...

still waiting for that next Steve Winwood trip hop album...
