You are just stuck on the fact that you think their R-8 is too obvious, like you griped about years ago when it came out. This LP isn't about ultra-clever programming, it is about a very positive and solid Detroit soundtrack to a post-industrial future. It ain't a good LP to pick apart for what gear made it, because it doesn't have any clever magic, just beautiful tracks.
