Just got back form seeing what has to be the worst band in the world,
followed by the best band in the world, and then i=one that falls somewhere
in between
Worst band: I'm tired, a little headachey, but I decide to go see DHR
anyway. i walk into the club, to some muddy, murky hardcore/gabba type
stuff, Ec8or. The vocal were unintelligible, the beats didn't change, the
hardcore punks were moshing with hands and legs pucnhign and kicking, and my
head just started to pound. The only words i was able to make out were the
ones I had read in a review the day before : "we're pissed, we're pissed, we
have to resist" "one-track minded fuckheads" *PROFOUND* ec8or has to be
the worst, most boring band ever.
Up next was Shizuo. i hadn't heard their album, so i don't know if they use
vocals or what they sound like precisely on their album... (Note: please
skip this paragraph of the review if you're going to the DHR tour and don't
want to spoil the surprise for yourself) . Band was a programmer, a woman
in a really tight dress, and a guy in an american football uniform, helmet
and all, carrying a bullhorn. The punks wait, eagerly anticipating screaming
and stuff. "Our first song is called Licky Licky sucky Sucky" she says and
starts to sing, but all that comes out of the speakers are beats, really
abrasive ones. The programmer looks confused, and starts trying to fix it.
because his mike isn't working, the football player starts playing the
preset tunes on his bullhorn, and the woman just dances around. the punks
are restless, and annoyed at all the noise they hear. the programmer
introduces himself "i'm dj Idi Amin" (hehehe) The football player starts
brawling with the programmer, and finally the punks are happy. Then, the
prgrammer goes back to fiddling with his equipment *trying* to "get it to
work." More hardcore beats and noise. finally he walks off, leaving nothing
but one abrasize, repetive beat. Some guy in the sudience (a klf fan in the
us?) starts a "fuck the millenium" chant. they come back, to more boos, and
the renewed fixit efforts only succeded in further modifying the beat, still
no vocals. The programmer keeps exhorting the audience, and they just hate
him. Finally their set ends, and everybody is just confused. FUCKING
GREAT!!!!! My friend thinks they were actually fucking up, but it was
obviously a joke. And I'm no hardcore fan, but the beats and distortion and
noise were really amazing, possibly putting aphex's live stuff to shame. and
this was much funnier than any dancing bears. go just to see everybody's
confused reaction, or if you like really good abrasive stuff... If you see
this tour, tell me whether this set was an actual screw up, and try to
remember their stage patter--I've forgotton some of the really good lines.
Atr was last up, and they played everything exactly the way it sound on
their album, to the sample, to the distortion effect... And they didn't play
Delete yourself or Kids are United, instead insisting on two of their boring,
slow grinds like The Future of War. Fun, and I might even have moshed if I
had 50 more pounds, but it wasn't anything amazing. Plus, saying "berlin's
gonna burn tonight" as a song intro sounds idiotic when you're standing in
NYC.
