>>STILL unable to get hold of CD1/LP1 here, but the track "Tanzen" is >> included on !K7's recent double CD set "Freestyle Files - Crackers >> Delight". This is the only Pole I've heard so far - is it indicative of >> the rest of his work? I was under the impression that it was quite >> dubby? (which I cannot say of Tanzen). Well, Irene, that depends, I suppose. None of Pole's work is as dubby as Maurizio, say, or Maurizio's Rhythm & Sound projects. I detect the dub influence in Pole as being something deep and submerged (true to form for the BC/CR folks, I really can't describe Pole without resorting to acquatic metaphor). On some tracks it's no more than a shadow; on some the bassline is pretty much straight up dub, but without the rest of the instrumental/formal trappings (backbeat riddim, skank guitar scratch, etc.). To the best of my knowledge, Pole has claimed not to have directly been influenced by dub, but rather to have picked it up secondhand through his BC/CR mates.. Given the heavy dub feel of his recent live show, I'll let you debate that. Interestingly, Richie Hawtin made the same claim in a recent interview (soon to go up on Urban Sounds)--that he's never been a dub listener or enthusiast. He laughs that some PR person wrote in a press release that he'd been influenced by King Tubby, or someone, who he'd never heard of at the time. Frankly, I doubt it a bit (given how dubby Consumed/concept are), but if true, it's an interesting point: it indicates how deeply entrenched dub structures are in techno... enough so that they've left their "home genre" and migrated to an entirely new space. phil ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
