fast tracker 2.06 has a free stereo diskwrite in it. that will
definitely
suffice for diskwriting .xm's, and will be ok for .mod's (not all, mind
you).
impulsetracker 2.14 has a free mono diskwriter in it (which will
play .it and .s3m if not fully, at least properly), but
you'll have to pay for the actual stereo diskwriter (mainly because
the author believed that stereo diskwriting is mostly for commercial
projects anyway, and thus it wouldn't do to give it out free).
you can bypass this limitation with a few ways. either you grab
modplugplayer (which will play 95% of the effects right most of
the time), try out winamp (which will play 75% of the effects wrong
all of the time) or sneak a warez version of the stereo diskwriter.

fast tracker 2.06, impulsetracker 2.14 and modplugplayer are easily
available thru

http://www.maz-sound.com
(ft2 and it2 from trackers, of course, and modplugplayer from the
players-menu)
http://www.modplug.com is the actual homepage tho.
