A newer more expensive solution is Dotz, which I have no first hand
experience with. It looks like their cord-id-pro may prevent some of
the snagging that might occur with the zip tie style labels, and they
may even be reusable which would be great.

A minimal approach is to go with self-laminating wire markers like
those from 3M or NSI. These are typically found on some of the smaller
diameter cables used in networking and ham radio, and can be useful in
situations where you may need to pull cables in the future.

For smaller jobs the write-on wire markers should work:

For larger jobs a label printer like a brady or a brother can be
handy. One of the most important things is buying tape that has
quality adhesive - nothing worse than having to redo all your work
after the labels have fallen off.
