COH
*Enter_tinnitus
Rastermusic

When I finish listening to this record, I spend a
few hours afterward absorbing the vibrations made
by the machines around me: lights flickering at 60
Hz, and fans whirring at various higher
frequencies. COH's first recording of electrical
static, aptly named *Enter_tinnitus, has an odd
way of creeping into the subconscious. Ivan
Pavlov, an acoustic engineer from icy Sweden, must
be going for high art--he'll never make it as an
entertainer. *Tinnitus organizes regular pulsing
and whirring noises in a sparsely textured sonic
field. A clever track at the end features lyrics
and vocals by Pavlov's excruciatingly cute baby
daughter, Sasha. All this cooing underscores the
primal infancy of the relatively new machine music
school which also includes the analog
click-and-whir of Finland's Pan Sonic. Look for
more of this material upcoming in Rastermusic's
raster.static series. COH, by the way, is the
cyrillic spelling for dream or sleep in
Russian--pronounced "sown." Too bad his first
record doesn't work very well for bedtime
listening. Must be all the vibrations I get to
listen to afterwards.
