A rare, timid stab at a review... Laurent Garnier: Coloured City EP, with the Black Dog remix of Crispy Bacon The remix is heavy, slow, funereal, dubby, not really what I expected. But then again I don't really know what to expect from Ken anymore, which is a good thing theoretically. Reminded me of Massive Attack and Joy Division - it's got that murky atmosphere (there's a JD pun :). I had to strain to think it was a Black Dog remix, although that burden eases up when the snares come in later in the track - then it sounds a bit more trademarked. As Music for Adverts was for me, there's nothing here that hooks you in the first time around, but it could be more of a grower. With respect to the recent round of comparisons between Ken and Ed/Andy, this remix won't win back any Plaid fans who didn't take to MfA. As for Plaid, the WAP100 track worried me a little - I hope they don't catch the Autechre bug and start producing minimal, tinny soundscapes a la Funkstorung, whom I like but are maximally derivative.
