Teknoir review (was (idm) hymen records)

here is something I posted a while back (p.s. passarani CD on Hymen is
quite good):

For a long time I avoided ant-zen/hymen. I had always heard that they
were power noise labels. But, I kept seeing releases in my local shop.
Day after day, mocking me. So I pick one up. A 2CD compilation called
teknoir (on hymen) and am supprised to see oil 10, bochum welt, it and
black lung on it. Perhaps it is worth a listen....

And I am glad I did. At times the tracks are hard, fast and sporadic.
While at other times they are more flowing and based on an emotional
response. A running theme throughout the CD is the use of noise to
compliment beat structures and synth lines (that is not to say melodies
are never employed). All in all though I would have to say that this is
IDM material. Some of it definitely reminds me of older aphex updated for
today. My favorite track on the comp is by klangstabil. Think a more
lo-fi i-f or kraftwerk gone bad. Considering all this, it makes the CD
one of the more original discs I have bought lately.

I will be paying attention to these labels from now on. And just think
all the artists involved on the comp made interesting electronic music
without copying autechre. Who knew.
