Simon-- If you don't own it already, check out "Planet Of The Shapes" [I think that's the title] from Orbital's second album [the brown one]. It's my favorite track by them; it features a sampled sitar [from a Suns Of Arqa song, Phil Hartnoll once told me--though he wouldn't reveal which one, the sneaky bastard] and a spoken-word sample of the hippy from the film Withnail & I ["Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day."]. It's not very dubby, but it's as trancey and middle-easternly psychedelic as anything I can think of in techno. Also, Transglobal Underground's first 3 albums have moments of the like you describe above. They're titled Dream Of 100 Nations, International Times and Psychic Karaoke. Probably most fruitfully, try just about anything on the WordSound label: Slotek, Spectre, Ebn E Sync, Equations Of Eternity (feat. Laswell and Mick Harris), etc. Dave Segal Managing Editor/Alternative Press Reviews/BPM/Reissue Redux/Origins Of Cool Secret Ions on WCSB Thursdays 9-11PM EST www.wcsb.org
