third eye foundation
_sound of violence_ cdep (24 minutes, roughly)
(merge/domino MRG134CD)

four tracks from mr. elliot, 2 new & 1 new remix, plus a remix
of a track from the _ghost_ album. as opposed to the dark,
densely layered atmosphere of that album, _sound of violence_ takes
an almost giddy, gleeful approach to the material, while still
maintaining that sense of alienation.
the main thing i notice here is the tendency towards a more drill
and bass sensibility, with the beats heavily chopped and constantly
shifting through the soundfield. let's take it track by track:

"sound of violence"
absolute overload. jazz samples, screams, beats, all
manipulated and layered to the point of saturation. not so
much violent as just insane. lots of drilling.

"a name for my pain"
similar to a lot of the tracks on _ghost_, but not as
emotionally heavy or dense. again, drill-and-bass programming
taken to the illogical extreme, while dissonant, downsampled
horns drone in the background. lots of conretist use of bizarre
noises. ends with layered drones that sound like someone rubbing
their finger on the edge of a wine glass.

"pain" (violence version)
short, harsher beats, total manipulation of a downsampled
cymbal (?) mixed with the screams and other sounds from track 1.
painful and highly experimental. good to listen to if you really
want to feel insomniac, strung out and wide awake.

"corpses" (version)
a remix of "corpses as bedmates" from ghost. accenting the
ghostly wails in the background and doing weird things with the
beat, knocking the edges off and making it a bit more regular.
rattling, drilling, you know the rest.

overall: recommended for anyone who enjoys severely _out_ drum
and bass stuff, or who likes 3ef in the first place. i'm not
going to say that this is the best stuff he's done, but it is
worth picking up; i'm still hoping the material he did live
(composed mostly of turkish samples and severely fucked ambience)
is released someday.

(gyration)

absolute drum and bass brilliance. manages to convey the dark
atmosphere of techstep with intelligent programming and some
AMAZING sounds. experimental but totally listenable. perfect
for anyone who digs the panacea/chrome/no u-turn sounds but
(like me) is getting annoyed with simplistic two-step beats.

jesus, did everyone miss the boat on this? this is basically
the all-star EAR guys being remixed by PORTER RICKS. and it
manages to sound similar to the _biokinetics_ CD but without
the sometimes impenetrable song lengths and (almost too)
subsonics. extremely enjoyable, especially track 3, which
mixes a minimal, strange beat with sheets of staticky hiss
that peel away like onionskin. tasty!
