Heinz Holliger - Scardanelli Zyklus (ECM)
Very sustained and atmospheric (mostly) microtonal choral and ensemble pieces
which basically depict poet Friedrich Hölderin's descent into madness. The
sense of atmosphere is greatly enhanced by ECM's trademark excessive use of
reverb.

Some of György Ligeti's pieces such as Aventures/Nouvelles Aventures, Lux
Aeterna or Atmospheres are very "ambient" in my opinion. I think I once read
that Aphex was influenced by Ligeti while he was writing SAW II.

Jim O'Rourke's early work like "Tamper", "Disengage" and "Remove The Need".

I always thought Naked City's Absinthe was a great dark ambient album.
