In my case, the in-store listening stations tend to yield the opposite of
their intended purpose...since I also like to buy music on whim/cool
artwork/tenuous connection to other material, actually being able to listen
to something in the store is a tough test for the material in question to
pass.

It's really gotta be excellent to succeed in the store, because if it's only
average, I'll think, "Well this is OK, but there's all this other stuff here
I could buy instead!"

Whereas if I get something home unlistened and it's only average, I think
"OK, it's part of my collection now, so I need to give it a chance."

Today's planned record shopping excursion should be interesting...scouring
local flea markets for ultra-cheap used LP's of 80's cheez metal...to sample,
mangle, and deconstruct.
