There were quite a few 8x8 MIDI matrix patchbays in the days before everything started to get DAW controlled. For example, Kawai and Korg also made some. My personal favourites are the Miditemp PMM-88 (very powerful filtering, routing and merging, but very rare outside Germany), and the Anatek AMP-16 (which doubles as a programmable 16x16 audio matrix, SMPTE synchronizer and MAC ADB interface). Anatek also made a SMP7 with only the MIDI patchbay and SMPTE sync. As far as MIDI is concerned, the Miditemp devices are the cream of the crop, capable of splitting, filtering and reassigning channels, CCs and note ranges, while most other patchbays will only redistribute and merge ports.
