interesting thread here - and as andrewc mentioned, Raya at the ICA,
does try to do something a little different. i was involved in
promoting this night (and playing) for about 18 months, and our
mission was (and still is) to get as much good music showcased as we
could - regardless of it's genre/fashion/crowd etc

the way we went about this, was to choose four performers, be they
live acts or DJs and then programme the evenings entertainment. ie
sometimes have a live act on first, with no "warm-up" or try flipping
convention, with putting the sets on in reverse order than most other
places - ie banging techno first, to house or drum and bass with
an ambient/electronica finish. all sets last only an hour and each
performer was actively encouraged to play what ever they wanted.

this worked for us, as we had (have) a central venue, it being an
arts centre, meant, people are more up for experimention, and being
on relatively early (9pm-1am) many people were going on somewhere
afterwards to hear more "proper dance music" so something eclectic
was allowed ;-) this in addition to the visual and performance art in
the club made an interesting evening, and thus we got a load of press
attention.

it would be interesting to hear how other promoters decided who was
to appear on any particular line-up. ie big name dj's that draw in a
crowd, or some one who plays interesting stuff to develop a crowd and
a "club" like environment ?
