That means one thing to me -- it's time to go back > to basics, do it yourself midweek in a pub, and turn your back on > Peter Tong and Paul Oakenfold and all the other corporate geezers. > It's about the music, not about how cool you are or how much money > you make. interesting thread here - and as andrewc mentioned, Raya at the ICA, does try to do something a little different. i was involved in promoting this night (and playing) for about 18 months, and our mission was (and still is) to get as much good music showcased as we could - regardless of it's genre/fashion/crowd etc the way we went about this, was to choose four performers, be they live acts or DJs and then programme the evenings entertainment. ie sometimes have a live act on first, with no "warm-up" or try flipping convention, with putting the sets on in reverse order than most other places - ie banging techno first, to house or drum and bass with an ambient/electronica finish. all sets last only an hour and each performer was actively encouraged to play what ever they wanted. this worked for us, as we had (have) a central venue, it being an arts centre, meant, people are more up for experimention, and being on relatively early (9pm-1am) many people were going on somewhere afterwards to hear more "proper dance music" so something eclectic was allowed ;-) this in addition to the visual and performance art in the club made an interesting evening, and thus we got a load of press attention. it would be interesting to hear how other promoters decided who was to appear on any particular line-up. ie big name dj's that draw in a crowd, or some one who plays interesting stuff to develop a crowd and a "club" like environment ? dave colbran 07788 797 830 http://come.to/davecolbran
