USB-compatible ROM burner they prefer for burning vintage synth ROMs? I =
have one that works with an Apple 2 and from time to time I see Oberheim =
Prommers come up for sale, but I'd like to track down a well-built =
modern one that has a USB interface.

Funny, my first EPROM burner was an Apple II peripheral that I designed, =
built, and programmed myself. I later purchased a commercial EPROM =
burner card with software, but had to rewrite parts of the software =
because it was painfully and needlessly slow. Besides the difficultly of =
finding that hardware now, there=E2=80=99s also the issue of getting =
data on and off the Apple II. It=E2=80=99s fine for copying EPROMs that =
I have, but not so good when everything is on the internet.

That said, I am also interested in buying a well-built USB PROM burner. =
My friend with the Xpander is looking at a $55 option, but no way to =
verify the product quality.

Strange. The page you linked talks about =E2=80=9CTrue USB=E2=80=9D over =
and over, versus the old 25-pin cable. Do you not have the latest =
version of the GQ-4X? Although it=E2=80=99s Windows only, they make it =
sound like =E2=80=9Cthe best.=E2=80=9D
