I personally dislike the sound of the RMI pre amp - it=E2=80=99s a bit =
on the harsh side - but I love the sound of the Metric Halo Labs pre =
amp. That includes their 2882, ULN-2, LIO-8, and ULN-8. They do have =
both line level and microphone pre amps. Based on my opinion, I=E2=80=99d =
recommend just trying a different interface to see if you like the sound =
better.

IMHO there=E2=80=99s no need to spend $500 per channel to get an =
excellent sound.

won't do much, but the Midas for instance has a 20db PAD button which =
means you would then have to +20db on the pre amp, would that make the =
signal sound better than a line in +0db on the Midas pre amp?

Does that Midas 20 dB PAD not have an =E2=80=9Coff=E2=80=9D setting? =
There=E2=80=99s no sense in boosting 20 dB in a pre amp if you have to =
pad the signal by 20 dB again at the input. The PAD should only be =
necessary for input devices where you can=E2=80=99t simply turn down the =
output level. For everything else, turn off the PAD and reduce the =
output volume until your input levels are green.

Of course, if you=E2=80=99re shooting for distortion then it=E2=80=99s =
all a matter of taste. There aren=E2=80=99t any rules for distortion.
