As with almost any kind of music, there is a lot of this
stuff about and the best thing to do is listen to as much
of it as you can (by listening in record shops, buying the
music or downloading off the internet) and discover what
you really like. My favourites include works by Mike Paradinas
(mu-Ziq), Autechre (gescom), Seefeel (Disjecta, Scala etc) and
Locust (Mark van Hoen).

As for what are considered 'IDM must-haves', I'd list the
following records:

Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works 85-92
(who can deny this being a classic?)
mu-Ziq: Tango N' Vectif
  (way ahead of its time)
Reload: A Collection of Short Stories
  (Global Communication at work here)
Squarepusher: Feed me weird things
  (his first album)
Kinesthesia: Kinesthesia volume 1
  (Kobal is my fave)
Warp records: Artificial Intelligence series
(2 comps of the same name & several albums)
Leaf records: Invisible Soundtracks volume 1
  (Disjecta, Gescom, Being and Zurich)

IDM is not really a type of music, but if was it would
sound like the music of Richard D James. He inspired
the term and this mailing list.
