sorry if i'm behind all your buying habits (you already have these) ;)

dj vadim: ussr reconstruction 77 mins
track-by-track (original tracknames left out)
for those who don't want to read all this, tracks 10 11 12 13 are great,
7 3 4 5 are also worth having. so a little more than half is good.. like
a normal compilation ;)
i dunno what got into me i never do a big long review like this

could someone please tell me if the oval, clatterbox, & reflection tracks
are good examples of these groups (never heard them before this)..
thanks.

accurate descriptions follow:
1. jamie hodge remix
staticky old-record-sounding hip-hopish drum loop cut up into slow
breakbeats sometimes.. nice groovy bass.. the piano and wahwah things are
a bit too smooth for me.. pretty standard trip-hop stuff this track is..
not at all bad tho
2. the prunes remix
movie soundtrack-like.. the track is a mix of 'theme from conquest of the
irrational', which makes sense.. quite a bit of scratching of the sample
of a guy saying "conquest of the irrational".. it makes me think of
arabic, the notes are in that scale probly
3. techno animal remix
standard hip hop beat.. he plays a low vocal sample in his background all
the time, scratching it around slightly (maybe that one mentioned
above).. then it gets kinda dark, with an evil bass. after a bit we have
some different drums, faster breakbeatish and some analogish bleeps..
remains very evil.. i like it
4. the herbaliser remix
sounds like herbaliser.. with a guy rapping in japanese throughout a lot
of it! i've never heard it before... cool. a whole lot of excellent
scratching later.
5. kid koala mix
deep laid back bass, normal hiphopish drums, high jazzy guitar strummin,
little tiny wahs.. this weird, i've only ever heard kid k scratch away
insanely.. there's some little bits of scratchin mixed in.. instead of
making beats with the scratchin like i usually hear from him he uses it
for background ambient noises..
6. vadim vs. daniel pemberton
5.75 minutes of boring unoriginal crap, imo of course.. no interesting
sounds, just normal hip hop beat w/ some normal trip hop stuff
7. oval mix
i've never heard oval before.. awesome ambience at the beginning, very
strange, original.. little crunchy beat starts to come...hmm i expected
it to eventually pick up into a beat but it never did. neat sounds, not
at all concrete..
8. jupiter jam mix
guitar loop played over and over some guy rapping about something i
didn't want to listen to.. guitar changes at the end but that's it
9. dj krush remix
awful.. breathy lady keeps going 'ohhhhhhaaaahhhhhhohhhh'.. occassional
scratchin. "pretty" trip hop chords in background i guess.. i don't like
10. clatterbox remix
awesome heavy weird drum stuff.. fun. little bit of resonated (303-type)
notes mixed with scratching.. peaceful background synth chords come in
after a couple minutes.. jazzy notes sometimes thenn.. whatever was funny
at the beginning has been blended in and this is a seriously nice peace
11. animals on wheels mix
great breakbeat stuff, photek-ish, but cuts up and varies more.. much
better than the full length i listened to at the store by this guy..
stereo distorted breakbeat later.. great track. gathers a lot of energy.
other sounds besides drums are great too
12. reflection mix
staticky loops & breakbeats. great looping of weird samples.. fun/spooky
notes, bass.. jazzy too if that combination is possible ;)
13. vadim & the sycophants
i quite like the ambience, quite like nothing i've ever heard. hiphop
beat comes in and out. the analog bleeps, organ blips, noise rushes,
little bits of a scratching make it interesting while also melodiless.
great tho
14. silent poets remix
too slow. big synthy chords & then the standard hip hop beat takes over
and we have 2 alternating piano chords for a bit, then the big slow
synthy chords come back.. too long too slow.

animals on wheels: designs and mistakes
didn't buy it from the store, listened to it tho. not too great.. the
first few tracks were the most interesting.. the guys job with breakbeats
is quite nice sometimes but he gets all disjointed, loses the beat, and
unlike squarepusher who does this same thing, he never makes the beat
recover. drums sounds were pretty much the same.. on some tracks he
would turn distortion on heavy. accompanying sounds were usually a loop
of something cool but it played over and over. don't recommend, but the
guy has talent. i like his mix on the ussr reconst. a lot

squarepusher: burning n' tree
oh nevermind i won't review this.. it's all pretty great. if you like
the funky sound of squarepusher's bass, his excellent percussion, weird
noises, get it, obviously.

c.g ..
an annoying message will probably follow. stupid program
