i traded my OB-6 out for a Prophet-12 and had something of a synth epiphany. whoever designed the P-12 had the right idea -- it's very accessible, not too deep, and has some surprising areas to its palette (like wavetables and 4-op DX-style FM). it's the little things, like a dedicated knob for velocity sensitivity in each envelope section. like being able to slew the LFOs. like making the FX architecture easy but flexible. like having the audio oscillators as modulation sources. like having shortcuts for setting mod sources and destinations. like having the ribbons not just latchable but also pressure sensitive. like having a good solution for the perennial patch vs multi issue. almost the biggest plus is the character section which is post-oscillator and pre-filter. so if you have the oscillator tone you're looking for but it needs to be a bit grimy or scratchy, you can dial it in (and with knobs called Decimation and Hack, even!). a very fine degree of sonic sculpting is available here, and that's without considering the tuned feedback loop or the (analogue) distortion. on day one i duplicated a big VS string sound just to see if it could -- it can. on day two i nailed a church organ that previously took a sample to get right. and i could get a little more high-end penetration out of the organ just by fiddling with the Air knob. the filter is not as sweet sounding as the VS, and of course it doesn't have the VS's rough edges (which you're stuck with), but otherwise the P-12 is effectively a modern and much more accessible VS (and yes, using the extensive modulation facilities, you CAN do vector synthesis on the 12). oh and another thing - my dislike for too much choice is well documented, so the microcosm nature of the P-12 suits me very well. regular analogue waveshapes plus 12 digital waves which can be wavetabled with two others. i bet with all the other mangling available, those 12 can get anything the 99 VS factory waves can do. (ok, i really want an EEEE to go with the OHHHH and AHHHH, i'll just have to do that with the resonant LPF -> resonant HPF chain...)
