(idm) Re: Tight-Arsed Mailing List

The commercial radio station I worked for had a mailing list and I thought I
would act as a representative for the station, answering listener's questions,
informing them as to new developments, upcoming events, etc. It wasn't my
job. I wasn't getting paid for it and I was doing it on my own time. A noble
gesture, I thought. If I had only known what would happen.
All I did was open myself up to abuse from anyone who had a modem. Nothing
is as aggravating as coming home from work, settling back, relaxing and
finding your mailbox filled with hate mail. I decided, "Fuck 'em. I don't
need this." and quietly unsubscribed.
A few months later, people on the list were annoyed that no one from the
station was on the list, so they sent messages asking us to come back. I sent
a message back politely declining their request. In lurk mode, I covertly
read their replies. "Arrogant bastards. Who do they think they are? Without
us listeners, they wouldn't have a station."
So you see, it's impossible to overcome that barrier. It's jealousy that has
a lot to do with it. People don't feel comfortable talking to someone who is
(for lack of a better term) "more important" than they are. They will put
down the artists to bring them to "their level".
Don't like the new Ae? Fine, don't listen to it. Now, if Sean and Rob were
on the list, what kind of replies do you'd think they would get? "You fucking
suck. Ep7 is a piece of shit. Why don't you sell your gear to Funkstorung?"
Would you feel comfortable replying in that environment?
Lately, people have been ripping on DJ Spooky (again). I like most of his
work. As for his written stuff, I ignore it. I had the opportunity to
interview him, and he's a really nice guy. Sure, he's "verbose", but I found
him to be more colorful than arrogant. I didn't say, "Your scholarly (sp?)
rants are bullshit."
Are there any big name artists left on this list? Ken Downie doesn't reply
anymore. It's been long since Mixmaster Morris posted. Aphex Twin
(supposedly) posted in the beginning, didn't he? Has anyone even heard from
Jon Drukman?
Anyway, I don't know where I'm going with this and I got stuff to do.

Less stress,
Pete

PS I saw a listing for "Skampler Vol. 2" at Borders. What is this?
