Recently saw AmonTobin/Spacetime/MMMorris at the Justice League in
SanFran, so I thought I'd toss in my 2 cents:

-I was bummed that MMMorris went on first. I presumed that he was the
headlining act, and therefore would go on last, so I showed up at around
11:00pm, and missed his set--he went on first. That's nobody's fault but
my own.

-The only equipment they had was 2 1200's, a stomp-box delay or something,
and a Boss SP-202 mini-sampler. I think Jonah used these.

-Regarding the DJ'ing vs live PA argument: If Amon Tobin thinks that his
music shouldn't be 'rearranged' in the context of a live performance, and
is meant to be played as it is on the record, then why the fuck even have
him travel around as a DJ? Just send the fucking record in his place, and
have somebody place it on the turntable, and drop the needle on it, and
play it out? Why all the extra hype as him as a DJ?

[note: I read that interview at interlog.com, and I can understand and
appreciate his point that drum'n'bass is NOT band music, but
machine/SAMPLER music--but that doesn't say anything about playing live
WITH A SAMPLER, not with a proto-jazz band, ala Mikey P. or a whole slew
of others.]

I dunno. I'm frustrated because I make electronic music, and welcome any
gig chances I get, but I'm NOT, repeat NOT, a DJ...I really would like it
if live PA's were taken more seriously. Assuming that a live pa means
nothing more than somebody's running a DAT tape and "triggering a few
samples" over top of it is not doing the format justice. I saw Mouse on
Mars open for Stereolab last summer, and however the fuck they did it, it
was the most fun I've ever had at an electronic-music show of any
sort...except maybe the Kraftwerk show, which was mind-blowing.
